About Hypnosis

Clinical HypnotherapyWe all enter into natural trance states every day of our lives for example just before going to sleep on as we are waking up. Hypnosis is a little like sleep but is not sleep - you can hear everything that is said and you are in control at all times.

When we are in trance states we can access our unconscious mind more easily and when in a hypnotic trance positive, beneficial suggestions can be given to the unconscious mind to help generate positive changes in our lives. The unconscious mind can be source of many of our issues but can also be source of hidden resources.

You cannot be hypnotised against your will and cannot be made to do anything that you do not wish to do. Suggestions that run against your value or belief systems are automatically rejected. Hypnosis is therefore very safe.

New Scientist article

Clinical Hypnotherapy is simply the use of hypnosis to generate positive changes in our lives. Hypnotherapy can be employed to treat a wide variety of issues and conditions either as a stand-alone therapy or on conjunction with other therapies such as EMDR or NLP.

As a field of study modern Clinical Hypnotherapy is integrative which means that the best aspects of CBT, psycho-analysis, quantum psychology and counselling are integrated in the therapeutic process as a matter of course.

The vast proportion of people respond easily and quickly to treatment using hypnotherapy. The number of sessions required depends greatly on the nature of the issue and a variety of individual factors. In all cases a willingness to change must be present.

Therapy tends to be goal directed with regression being utilised only when other approaches have not generated the desired effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is simply a defocused, pleasantly relaxed state of mind similar to natural trance states eg when driving and in auto-pilot mode. It is thought that the unconscious mind is more easily accessed when in relaxed trance states. A complete definition of what hypnosis is does not really exist. What we do know is that hypnotherapy is highly effective.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to generate conscious and unconscious change in order to achieve a specific objective. The unconscious mind can be the source of our issues and the source of positive untapped resources.

One of the most important aspects of hypnotherapy is the need for positive co-operation between the client and therapist.

Am I in control?

You remain in control at all times. You cannot be made to do anything that runs against your core value or belief systems. You need to want whatever change is being proposed.

You will be able to hear everything and you may remember everything. Equally it's OK for your conscious mind to wander your unconscious mind will hear and remember everything that you need to hear and remember.

Can everyone hypnotised?

Almost everyone can enter into some form of trance state. A smaller number of people can access very deep trance states but that's fine because most therapy work is done using light to medium depth trance states.
